Demon World’s Brothel - Demon World's Brothel – Chapter 80
“You’re closed?” A demon blinked. “Why?”
“It’s Sunday.” I coughed. “It’s our day off.”
Despite the revelations with Marina, the business needed to go on. A week had passed by of backbreaking labor. The girls had swap spots between working in the kitchen and working in the brothel. Of course, I limited the open time for the soup kitchen considerably. There was no point in running it all day. Instead, it only ran twice for two hours around lunch and then dinner. That still meant I lost two of my girls during the busiest period, which left a lot of demons disgruntled.
Furthermore, the women were unhappy that we were open for such a short amount of time. Many women ended up going unfed every day, but the food they consumed was eating into my budget more than I had originally hoped. If it wasn’t for Lieutenant Dire’s men keeping watch, there would already have been a riot.
In short, I had managed to anger the demons and the women. That just showed you that it was a bad decision to give anyone anything for free. I shut the door and let out a long sigh as I leaned against it. That’s when I noticed Charak standing there, looking expectant. I raised an eyebrow.
“You won’t be needing me then?” Charak asked.
“Ah, that’s right, I did ask you to come today. If you could send anyone on their way this morning until they get the message.”
I had already implemented the day off a week before, but the women weren’t used to this and would end up starving that day, upsetting many of them. As a result, I ended up opening and giving out the leftovers, which caused the demons to think the brothel should be open too. In short, no one was happy with what they got.
“They usually get the hint after an hour or two. Do you mind if I leave then?” He asked.
“Why? You have somewhere to be?” I frowned.
“Ah, guilty as charged.” He chuckled. “I hope it won’t be a problem.”
I was a bit surprised by his answer, but after quickly thinking about it, I gave him a nod. “It’s fine, you can take the day off if you need it.”
He had rarely ever demanded much, and his asking for a day off was nearly unheard of.
“Naw, it’s fine, I can put in a few hours.” He shrugged.
“Right, did you need one of the girls to give you a cleaning?” I asked, trying to guess if he was just horny.
He grinned. “Not today. Eh, I’ve been thinking about it, and I was wondering if you wouldn’t be willing to convert my cleanings into the money it would have cost.”
“You… want me to pay you?” I asked, feeling slightly shaken.
“Is that a problem, boss?” He raised an eyebrow.
I quickly shook my head. “No, not at all. If you know any other demons who might like a job, I don’t know how much longer Lieutenant Dire is going to station troops out front. We need to start worrying about our safety long term.”
“Will do!” He waved and then headed outside.
I watched as he didn’t even get a drink. Something was up with Charak, although I couldn’t guess what that was.
“Master, the new girls are all waiting in the back where you asked me to put them.”
I nodded. “Tell me, Elizabeth. How did we do with recruiting?”
“For that… not well.” Elizabeth let out a sigh. “We’ve recruited a total of eighteen women this week. Ten of them didn’t last. They either left and never returned, planned to steal, or otherwise I caught with malicious intent.”
I made a face at her words. Of course, we continued our attempts at recruiting throughout the week, but it didn’t go as smoothly as I originally hoped. After the initial eight, we had managed to find another ten women over the last week. However, many of the ones we originally recruited ended up not working out. I had hoped that the processing center would have weeded out the unreliable ones, but even with a mind reader, a thirty-second assessment wasn’t enough to truly understand the character of a person.
There were various other girls, from one who hated demons to her core to another who was just looking for the opportune time to rob us. One of the girls had been a Sal plant who managed to get passed the first round. She was a sociopath like Diana, so Elizabeth couldn’t tell she was lying, so we had to weed her out other ways.
Some of the girls weren’t bad, but they simply ran away. They went to the restroom and then we didn’t see them again. They slipped away, perhaps afraid of the change that this job would represent, or finally having the implications of working for a demon get the better of them. Perhaps, if Elizabeth could have worked on adjusting their moods all day, some of them wouldn’t have come to their senses, but that wasn’t how I wanted to do things. I did try to recruit them a bit heavy-handedly, but a the end of it all, it needed to be their choice.
“Haven’t I done well?” Marina asked.
“You burned several pots of soup, ruined clothing in the laundry, and then caused a fire.” Diane read off from a document in front of her, causing Marina to wince with each accusation. “Subtracting a week of pay, you currently owe us 12 dragons, 7 drakes, and 12 wyverns.”
“Eh? Th-those were honest mistakes! I have to pay for those?” Marina looked miserable.
“Where about the other girls that stayed?” I asked, ignoring Marina.
After her revelation about needing to become pregnant, she hadn’t brought it up again, and I didn’t want to think about it. Although I had to encourage breeding in this world, I had no desire to lead by example.
“Of the five remaining, their talents are nonexistent. Among them, none of them would be able to even qualify to apply as a servant in my palace.” Alleya spoke with a bit of scorn. “Besides Marina, none of them can read. They don’t know how to cook, clean, or even offer proper etiquette.”
I nodded, although I had known this already. I had been able to see the girls bumbling around the last few days. It may seem like things would get easier with new employees, but they were ultimately untrained, and so that made the work even more difficult. On top of that, I seemed to have underestimated the ability of the new girls. They were told things repeatedly and still couldn’t do them, and if they weren’t told anything, they would just stand around and do nothing.
I quickly realized my mistake. This wasn’t like hiring someone from my previous world, where everyone was educated to a certain level. These girls had been on the streets their entire lives. Even before the war, there was no standardized schooling, but after the war, it was only amplified as many were raised without even parents to teach them right and wrong.
I had taken for granted my other girls. Elizabeth was hardworking and determined. Diana was quick-witted and had a malleable mind. Alleya had been a former princess with all the education that entailed. Even Daphne as an elf seemed to have grown up with a basic level of education among the more stable elf society, and if nothing else, had developed street smarts that allowed her to know when it was appropriate to fake it. Even Luna was eager to please and didn’t talk much. These girls were exceptionally useless and when they weren’t being useless, they were causing trouble.
Maybe it was my selection process that was flawed. The demons didn’t have any particular standard of beauty. Maybe, I should have recruited for intelligence rather than attractiveness. Ultimately, I had picked a woman based on my standards of attraction, but the result was a bunch of girls with air between their ears. However, I had a feeling, that most of the women on the street were like this, and the girls I had found prior were all lucky gems.
My biggest frustration was that I couldn’t push them hard. After already seeing twelve of them flee, I was afraid of losing the few that stuck around. Other than Marina, the other girls were extreme flight risks. After taking a breath, I nodded.
“Send them out,” I ordered, prompting Luna to go back and fetch them.
The five girls were brought out. From the first day, the only two who remained beside Marina were the twins. I wondered if their having each other had kept them from fleeing. This prompted me to consider a buddy system. The twins were scruffy-looking dirty blondes. They were skinny but had started to plump out a bit after a week of food.
“What are your names?” I asked.
I had already known their names before, but I had already forgotten them. The twins spoke first.
“Alice.”
“Anna.”
Then, a smaller girl spoke up. “Bridgette.”
The newest girl had only been added yesterday. She looked the most nervous. She had a very petite body and a flat chest. Where Alleya was slender and graceful, this girl just looked small about four foot and six inches. She didn’t look like she had dwarfism, or was a dwarf, nor did she appear particularly child-like. I still suspected she had something in her that wasn’t human, or it could simply be that she was malnourished as a child, as many were.
“Crystal.” The next girl stepped forward.
She was an older woman. Her face wasn’t perfect, but I hadn’t picked her for her face. Her boobs were extremely large. Even Elizabeth was thrown to dust with those things. She would easily be able to do boob stuff. The only worry was that someone’s dick might become lost in those things.
“Dominique.” The last girl nodded.
She was more exotic than the other four, with extremely dark skin. The only part of her that was pink was a certain part of her lower anatomy. What? I had seen all of these girls naked in the shower before recruiting them. It was the least to be expected.
“It’s time to start your proper training!” My eyes flashed.
