Chapter 1785

“I apologize! This kind of thing never should have happened!” Marina had her head lowered.

The explosion had occurred, but I didn’t take any damage thanks to Celeste. She was able to create a windshield around us before the shockwave even reached me. The two girls I had protected didn’t know that, and as far as they could tell I took the explosion myself. In truth, my back was singed and I wasn’t sure how bad the damage would have been without Celeste’s last-minute save, but ultimately no one was hurt. Celeste was extremely fast, that was one trait of hers I couldn’t deny.

However, that explosion was far gutsier and more dangerous that Rea’s previous assassination attacks. After she attempted to stop Marina from going to the car, it was pretty obvious that she had some kind of assassination attempt planned, but I hadn’t expected her to do such a public one that could potentially have collateral damage. If the bomb truly had worked, I wouldn’t have been the only person in the car anyway. Sapphire, Bernice, Miki, and Celeste could have potentially all been in danger too.

“It shouldn’t have happened.” I agreed, but my eyes were locked on Rea, who was deliberately looking away from us.

The only reason I had been soft on her up until now is that she genuinely seemed to not want other people to be hurt. Her previous attempts had been specifically aimed at me. While I didn’t think anyone would have died from her explosion, and even if they did die, I could resurrect them, it was still a different behavior than I was used to. On that note, what did she hope to accomplish? If we died, we’d just be reincarnated again. If she wanted me dead, there were more reliable ways to accomplish it.

“I’m sorry! I will get to the bottom of this!” Marina seemed to misunderstand my displeasure and became even more frantic. “Such a mechanical failure will never happen again!”

“A mechanical failure?” I blinked. “You’re not wondering why Rea was trying to prevent you from going to the vehicle?”

Rea stiffened at those words. I was going to have to call her out, and she’d have to face the consequences of her actions. I had already protected her from Dioshin. Now that she decided to upset Jespain, I wouldn’t put my neck out a second time. Realization seemed to cross Marina’s face. It looked like she understood now.”

“That’s right… she did…” Marina glared at me. “You tampering with the golem, causing it to explode!”

I nearly choked. “I’m sorry, what?”

“I-it wasn’t that!” Rea cried out. “I have Dungeon Diver and my Danger Sense kicked in. That’s why I tried to get Marina away from the explosion. If I knew the explosion was coming, why would I run into it.”

“Ah…” Marina’s cheeks colored. “I see, that makes sense.”

Does it? Danger Sense? That was a bald-faced lie. She had put some kind of explosive thing into the carriage. I glowered at her, but before I could call her out, Rea spoke up.”

“I-I would like to know how Lord Deekson knew the car was going to explode so that he could come and save us in time?” Rea asked.

Marina’s eyes widened, and then both girls turned to me.

“Uhhh…. D-danger Sense.” I gave the only answer I really could.

“Then, I suppose I should thank both of you.” Marina lowered her head. “Since this appears to be an accident, let’s leave it at that for now. Come, the schedule waits for no one.”

She ushered us into the last carriage. The ones with the other girls had already driven away once confirming everyone was safe. Rea ended up getting pushed into the carriage with us. It seemed like she avoided a confrontation this time. I just hoped there wouldn’t be a next time.

Chapter 1786

“We’re leaving the city again…” Sapphire pointed out as our carriage once again took a route that wasn’t expected.

“You do not need to worry.” Marina cut in. “This is part of the schedule.”

I frowned slightly, but I didn’t feel like they would try anything. After all, there was an assassination attempt only a few minutes before and by Marina’s flustered appearance, I couldn’t believe that she was planning us any harm. I decided to let them surprise us with whatever they intended and kept my mouth quiet. At the least, I could tell by my Map that we were heading in a different direction out of the city than the last time we left.

We continued in silence for some time, but it was Rea who suddenly spoke up. “L-lord Deek… earlier, you jumped over and grabbed us and protected us from that explosion…”

“Hmm?” I had been staring out the window, trying to stretch my mana sense as far as I could to fill in my map.

Occasionally, I would hit dead patches where my mana sense couldn’t enter. After passing them, I could see on my map that many of them held a circular pattern. Were these dungeons? It was also possible they had some kind of blocking technology. Certain artifacts could erect a barrier that acted much like a dungeon. It blocked the movement of mana across it, which meant it blocked mapping, tracking, summoning, resurrections, and so on.

Although Alysia had once been extremely excited over finding an artifact that could erect a barrier that kept people from reincarnating outside it, it only showed just how small and inexperienced the southeastern countries truly were. I did not doubt that Jespain had such technology, and I imagined the Imperial Cloud Meadow did as well. Soul-reaving daggers weren’t the most dangerous thing on a battlefield. The mana blockers could severely limit the ability to resurrect in a prolonged battle. It would give a natural home-field advantage, making it very difficult to invade another country.

“That’s right!” Marina’s expression also turned strange. “Y-you saved us. I forgot to thank you. I, no, both of us would have died in that explosion if it hadn’t been for you.”

“I had merely acted because of my Danger Sense.” I shrugged it off, using the excuse I had already come up with. “However, if you want to thank someone, it was Celeste who saved all of us. She erected a shield around us.”

“Ah, M-master… you noticed.” Celeste’s cheeks turned red and she put her arms together excitedly, causing her chest to nearly pop out of her fairy dress.

“Th-the fairy?” Marina’s eyes widened as she turned to Celeste, who was her full size at the moment.

I reached out and patted Celeste’s head. “I was just an idiot who jumped in the way of an explosion. She’s the one who made the right decision.”

The praise seemed to be too much for Celeste, and she buried her head in my chest to hide her blushing, but she seemed extremely happy.

“She is the smart one…” Sapphire spoke in a daze.

I wouldn’t go that far. She had just used her instincts. Wind came naturally to her. For me, well, the Hero job was all about self-sacrifice, so I’ll just say that job was being a bad influence on me.

“Then, Deek didn’t do anything. Hmph…” Rea’s conflicted expression seemed to reach and conclusion and she looked away with a sniff.

It seemed like saving her life hadn’t earned me any points. I felt like sighing. I still didn’t know what to do with her.

Chapter 1787

“This is another workshop?” I observed as we finally pulled up in front of a large building.

“I think… they produce guns here!” Bernice announced although I was already confident of that because I could hear somewhere in the distance a popping sound that resembled gunfire.

“This is the top gun manufacturer in Jespain,” Marina announced proudly, and then quietly under her breath. “Let’s see them outdo that!”

My lips twisted slightly. Lady Seeired had promised to get us in to see her golem workshop and the gun manufacturer. She had successfully gotten us to the golem manufacturer in the most obvious manner imaginable. She had reprogrammed the golem that was driving us! However, after we were stolen away the day before, Seeired’s rivals couldn’t allow her to just do whatever they wanted. They had suddenly changed our vehicle last second. The bomb aside, it was clear that they had done this to bring me and my group here.

Despite Seeired’s promise, the best she could do was a gun manufacturer that was only the 2nd best in Jespain. Out of six territories, second best wasn’t saying much.  The refluents contained the best gun manufacturer, and they knew it. It appeared that after figuring out Seeired’s agreement with me, they sought out to one-up her. Since I was already going to see some of their manufacturer’s trade secrets anyway, it might as well come from the refluents instead of the prepotents. Both sides were fighting for my favor, and I got to take on the benefits of both. I wasn’t going to complain at all.

“Hello!” A portly man appeared with a beard and goggles on.

Compared to the golem master who seemed to be rather annoyed when he had to attend to us, this guy wore a big welcoming smile on his face.

“This factory is owned by Lord Vandeer himself. This is our head of Research and Development. He will be taking you on a personal tour of the facility.” Marina announced.

The man let out a laugh, holding out his hands welcoming us. “Haha… I heard you have a gunslinger among you. In the history of Jespain, we have only managed to produce six people who gained the job gunslinger. I have to say, I’m very impressed. I’d love to share our lore with you.”

It appeared that the refluents were far more welcoming and friendly on the surface. I wasn’t going to be so easily swayed by such a thing, but I also wasn’t going to give them a cold shoulder either. To date, I hadn’t seen anything that suggested one side deserved anything over another.

“Of course, I’ll be happy to exchange what we have with you.” I smiled at him.

I had manufacturing information from my world, but I wasn’t going to share that with them. The most I’d share were the guns that were on Bernice. As far as they knew, that was all that we had. Given the vast knowledge of firearms, I felt that giving them this wasn’t much. A bullet could only do so much damage, even in a gunslinger’s hands. I realized I had already reached a point where firearms weren’t much more dangerous to me than a sword. Bernice had reached the limit of her strength too, and the only way to surpass it was to get a better weapon. Simply put, the years of magical research they put into refitting guns as magical items were far more useful in this world, and I felt quite comfortable with such an exchange.

it looks like the names of the factions have gotten switched here. originally, the lady lord and her faction of weaker lords was introduced as the refluent while lord vandeer and his faction of stronger lords was introduced as the prepotents. now in this chapter you’re saying the factory under lord vandeer belongs to the refluents.
