Getting Lucky - Chapter 2
I woke up, and surprisingly, I didnβt feel any pain. As my eyes opened, I realized I was in a typical hospital room lying on a typical hospital bed. There was a beeping noise, and also an IV hooked up to me. Apparently, I was getting just the right amount of painkillers to feel good, but not too much that my mind went groggy. My brain was working at full tilt. I could even remember that white room and that goddess. It was a really weird dream. However, I was way too much of a pessimist to think it was real.
The truth in this world was much harsher. I was hit by a truck. Iβm probably going to need a lot of physical therapy to get over the pain and regain my faculties. In the meantime, my hospital bills will explode, and Iβll be stuck in debt for the rest of my life. At the moment, I had managed to avoid debt. I didnβt take loans, and I didnβt borrow money. That was one of my rules. However, I couldnβt stop a hospital from treating me and then charging me for it.
βYouβre alive! Thank God!β A womanβs voice came from my side.
I was very surprised because I couldnβt think of a single person who would care if I was hit by a car. Not even my mother would come to the hospital room to see me, so who was this woman? Glancing to my side, I saw a buxom woman with long hair. She was wearing a blouse and a jacket. She looked very professional, but the top few buttons had been undone and she was displaying an improper amount of cleavage.
I stared at the cleavage for a bit as she stood up and came to my bedside. They jiggled way more than they should have. Was this woman wearing a bra at all?
βHeβs awake!β Another girl suddenly exploded forward, except she landed on my stomach with all of her weight.
βOoof!β I let out a cry but was surprised I didnβt feel any pain.
Looking down, there was a little girl hugging me really tightly. She looked up and smiled, showing a pair of perfect teeth. She had a cute face, with hair lighter than the older woman. They looked like they were mother and daughter. The similarities were hard to shake off. What were two beautiful women, a mother, and her child, doing in my hospital room?
At this point, before I could ask a thing, the door opened and a man walked in. He had on a lab coat so I could only assume he was a doctor.
βHello, Mr. Fuyo, uhβ¦ sorryβ¦ I didnβt get your first name.β
βFuyo?β I blinked.
βYour name is Fuyo Fuyo?β The doctor asked questioningly.
βAh! Honey, my husbandβ¦ donβt fool around.β The older woman hugged my arm, her chest pressing against it tightly. βThis is my husband Danny Fuyo! Weβre newlyweds!β
βR-rightβ¦ you can call me Rick forβ¦ short?β I suggested.
βRickβ¦β The woman sounded out the name like she was savoring it and then nodded. βYes, of course, Danny Fuyo, but we call him Rick!β
βOf courseβ¦β The doctor was too busy filling out his paperwork to notice my weird look, or the girl cautiously putting her finger to her lips.
βWell, fortunately, your wife has great insurance, so donβt feel like you need to leave the hospital until you feel like you have to,β the doctor said and then coughed. βAhβ¦ the lawyers say I need to stop saying those kinds of things.β
βWhat? When can I go?β
The doctor shrugged. βWe already did a full-body scan. No broken bones. No internal bleeding. To be honest, weβre rather shocked. That truck hit you at forty miles an hour, yet there isnβt a scratch on you. Youβre a really lucky man, Mr. Fuyoβ¦β
βTh-thanksβ¦β
He had me sign a few more things and when I said I didnβt want to stay, he sighed and said heβd send the discharge papers soon. Everything was happening perfectly. Too perfectly. Except, my name wasnβt Danny Fuyo, it was Rick Veris. I also didnβt have a daughter and a wife. They both watched with smiles as the doctor checked me one last time before he gave me a bill of perfect health. When he left, I stared at the two oddly familiar women, and then it clicked in my head.
βW-wait! Youβre the girl I pushed out of the way!β I snapped my fingers.
The ten-year-old girl nodded tearfully. βI-Iβm sorry!β
The woman leaned forward, her soft chest pressing on my arm while she held her face close to mine and gave a begging expression. βCan you ever forgive my useless daughter?β
βC-closeβ¦β I responded, smelling her soft flowery scent as her fun bags pressed against me even tighter.
βHmm?β She seemed completely clueless that she was very pretty and was also touching me closely.
βWhat is this about Danny Fuyo?β
Her smile slipped and she finally pulled away, crossing her arms. βI-I panicked. When I saw you get hit and my daughter was the cause, I was so worried youβd be one of those bad men who say they got hurt and then demand money!β
βDo I look like a gang member?β
βThen, when the ambulance asked who you were, I just blurted out that youβre my husband. You see, my husband left me three months ago. The divorce isnβt finalized and heβs still on my insurance. Since he has never been sick, there is no record of him. Since my daughter caused all of this, the least I could do is let you be healed on my health insurance.β
βHealth insurance fraudβ¦ thatβs a littleβ¦β
That definitely violated my rules. Any crimes were bound to be caught almost as soon as they were committed. I was the unluckiest man on the planet. There was no way I could get away with such things. Just having a woman here caring about my health probably already used up all the luck I had in an entire lifetime!
βDonβt worryβ¦ I know a lot of people. Iβll be able to sort this all out,β the woman said. βI recently was promoted to the CEO of my company. So, money is really no object now.β
βS-seriously?β I looked at her wide-eyed, finding it hard to believe someone could do so much.
βAh!β She let out a cry and blushed. βIf itβs money you wantβ¦ I can send you a little bit. Just a million or two. Can you give me your address so I can send you money?β
I almost coughed up blood. βA million?β
βI-is that not enough?β She asked tearfully.
What was with this woman? Did she not have a grasp of money!
βNo, actually, I donβt want anything!β I insisted. βI mean, if you cover the hospital bills, thatβd be fine. Why even bother with insurance fraud if you can afford it.β
She looked down sadly, her lips pouting slightly. βThey only let family in the room. If I didnβt say I was your wife, they would have kicked me out.β
βAhβ¦ well, thank you for everything. I really am grateful.β I gave her a smile. βYouβre really a good person.β
Her expression recovered and she let out a small smile. βIn that case, Iβm very glad that I made you happy. Since youβre being discharged soon, at least let me drive you home.β
βAhβ¦β I froze there. βActuallyβ¦ I donβt have one.β
βYouβre homeless?β She gasped.
βEh? Mister doesnβt have a home?β The little girl looked up and asked.
βAhβ¦ thatβs rightβ¦β I laughed, then I noticed both girls were crying. βWait, why are you crying?β
βTh-thatβs the saddest thing Iβve ever heard!β The little girl bawled.
βTo have nothingβ¦ and even then, give your life away over my useless daughterβ¦β
βItβs really nothingβ¦β
βNo! This wonβt stand!β The woman made a fist with her hand. βYou must stay with me and my daughter. We have a room in my home for you. Come live with us!β
βAhβ¦ o-okay?β
I really didnβt have anywhere to go. As soon as I got out, Iβd be sleeping on a bench in the park. In retrospect, I should have taken the doctor up on his suggestion that I stay a few days longer. This solved my problem completely. While it was true, they were strangers and a bit strange too but I didnβt have much of a choice.
The discharge papers came soon after while the two girls assured me I was making the right decision in moving in with them. I didnβt want to be a burden. Given how badly this woman seemed to understand money, it was possible she lived in a pretty bad location. She was a single mom, after all, and her promotion only just happened. A CEO sounds impressive, but she could have been the CEO of a hotdog stand for all I knew.
The two rolled me out of the hospital in a wheelchair. Apparently, that was their policy. As we came out the door, a long black limousine pulled up. The kind of people who visited the hospital in that kind of vehicle seemed ridiculous. Wait⦠the driver was an old man who was gesturing to us. Why were we stopping in front of it?
Suddenly, I was in the back of a limousine with the beautiful mother and her daughter. The daughter turned on a gaming system and started playing the latest Mario game. The mother gave me a reassuring smile.
βWould you like anything? Soda? I have a soda dispenser in the door. Oh! The chairs can do a shiatsu massage if you want. Unlessβ¦ you want me to massage you instead?β She suddenly blushed, looking a dozen times cuter.
βAhβ¦ thatβ¦β My mind was completely blank.
I had just woken up, and I was already in a limousine with two beautiful girls. Was my luck really turning around? On that note, did that weird dream I had really happen? Did I have Godβs luck?
The woman told me her place was actually some distance away from our hospital, and itβd be about an hourβs ride. I learned that her name was Connie and her daughterβs name was Zoe.
I ended up picking up a controller and playing with the little girl. For some reason, she insisted on sitting in my lap while we played. Her mother watched us with an amused and friendly smile on her face. I felt really happy, but I also felt a little strange.
Time passed by quickly, and the limousine finally stopped. When I looked out the tinted windows, my mouth fell open. They didnβt live in a house. They lived in a mansion.
βHow many empty rooms did you say you have?β
βHmm?β Connie blinked and then blushed. βAhβ¦ I knowβ¦ Itβs about 20.β
The mansion was massive, with beautiful landscaping, multiple wings, three stories tall, with giant columns and pillars. Could I really live here? Was this my life from now on?
βCome inside,β Connie said. βI have one more thing for you. Please donβt refuse it.β
I gulped. The way she said that sounded like it was really important. One thing I was certain of. Once I entered this mansion, my life would never be the same.
