- I Reincarnated into a Single-celled Organism! - Chapter 182
The next few days were surprisingly uneventful. The Frankford and the Stride households were quiet, and no one ended up disturbing me. Abigail had placed the book I had handed her into the treasury and she didn’t even glance at it. I naturally had rigged the book with my sentinels. If someone opened it, I would know and could even destroy the contents. Although I told her it was a fake, I was still surprised she didn’t snoop. I felt like I could trust her just a bit more.
The book had remained in that treasury unmolested ever since. I had also used the opportunity to see what was in her treasury. My senses were limited by an immobile book on a pedestal. I didn’t want to risk triggering whatever alarms they had by moving my sentinels. This was my newest feature. Since I had more cells to spare, I could make any sentinel divide and specialize into a form that could move around. Originally, I made the form spiderlike, but I didn’t like the aesthetic, so I changed it into something closer to a roach using Mimic.
Either way, I spent those few days finishing up the renovations on the mansion. I didn’t just redo the floors, walls, and roof… but I also got into woodworking and created entire sets of furniture. With the skills given to me throughout my evolution, I found this work to be extremely quick and even a bit enjoyable. In another life, I bet I could make quite a profit selling my natural furniture. Most of it had a wilderness cottage feel, the kind of sets one could only find from specialized craftsmen.
I could cut down trees with ease using waterjet. I’d use Osmosis to pull the water out of wood and dry it quickly. Cohesion allowed me to bind wood together, fusing two pieces without glue. Of course, I could use Adhesion for fusing wood with other materials. I could decompose or lysis material to create holes and notches. Of course, the most useful skill was Matter Shifting, which allowed me to mold the wood into any form I wanted. I also found I could accelerate the growth of living plants by using Cellular Growth, so even if I couldn’t find a tree the size I wanted, I could create a new one.
“Master is incredible,” Priscilla spoke with wide eyes as she brought out my noon snack.
She had also fallen into a habit of making sure I ate. I didn’t need the food, but I took it anyway. Sometimes I ate it, sometimes I tossed it into Luminal Storage. I tested whether Luminal storage preserved the state of food long-term. After some careful experimentation, I found that anything tossed into my Luminal space was immediately brought to my body temperature. I couldn’t store hot or cold things. This meant it was impossible to keep ice, although I had Thermoregulation and could cool or heat something once I pulled it out of my Luminal Space.
While my Luminal Space was sterile, and no mold or bacteria would grow, food would become stale over time. It lasted much longer than in the normal world, but it didn’t last forever. However, staleness was also a hard word to define. After all, the water content in food in my Luminal Space wouldn’t change, and the basic composition also wouldn’t change.
In other words, if I didn’t pull something from my Luminal Space and eat it, I could absorb it directly and get the same nutritional value as when I put it into my space. Simply put, it was just that food that spent a long time there would taste off. This wasn’t just my conclusion, but I had Priscilla do a few blind taste tests and she came to the same conclusion. I still stored foods that wouldn’t spoil easily in my Luminal Space. One never knew when a time might occur when I was deprived of nutrients, or needed to help feed someone else.
Priscilla had also grown increasingly comfortable. After renovating the kitchen for her, she was quite enamored with it. I wasn’t an engineer, but I still knew enough about science that I was able to improve upon the designs of the supplied mortal ovens. Immortals didn’t need to eat, and when they did, they would use mana devices. Thus, this world had never developed mortal tools very far. Based on some rumors I heard, I’d suspect that this world could have been at the same level as my original world, except that everyone with a scientific flare ended up becoming a paragon, and paragons cared little for the plights of mortals. Why waste time improving the life of a mortal? If that mortal wanted a better life, he should work to become a paragon! This was the mentality of this world.
Priscilla put a plate filled with pastries and fruit. Most of the fruit was the stuff grown in my garden. She didn’t ask how a garden I planted only a few weeks ago was already sprouting fruit. To Priscilla, these were matters of immortals. Paragons did all kinds of amazing things, so if I had fruit grown in two weeks, that was merely one more thing that we could do. Maybe this was why Abigail said I could trust her.
She sat down across from me, her cheeks growing slightly pink. This was also something I had encouraged her to do. I didn’t even need to eat at all, but if I was going to do so, I wanted someone to dine with. I insisted on Priscilla taking a seat with me. At first, she sat quietly with her head down, but after some time, she started to pick a few pieces of food, but only after I had my pick.
“Master, I received a message earlier,” Priscilla spoke up as she put a bit of cream on her plate.
“Yes?”
She made a strange face. “Mara is ready for tonight. That was the message.”
I smiled. “Perfect.”
Her face turned redder, but I didn’t bother with whatever she was concocting in her head. After finishing our meal, I finished my work in the garden. Compared to before, I had experimental fields with a variety of unique plants. I had grown shrubbery around it to completely block the view of my fields. That’s because anyone with sufficient knowledge of them would go completely nuts. It was a cacophony of rare plants. I had even managed to successfully resurrect one from my extinct stock. Of course, I had sentinels watching over the area, but for as much as the Capala family wanted to spy on me, they seemed to have no interest in my field.
When the sun started setting, I cleaned up and then headed to the back door of the main mansion. I didn’t knock but instead waited. I was a bit early, so it was nearly an hour before the door opened. On the other side was Pierre his nose in the air.
“I must say, this is rather uncouth to sneak the young master into the mansion after hours. If Master Conway learns of this, it could cause a scandal!”
“Then let’s make sure this remains a secret.” I grinned.
He sniffed. “You may have your thoughts about me, but I am always loyal to our misses.”
He turned and I followed him. Naturally, he took an out-of-the-way path, but I still ended up being brought before Abigail’s doorway. His lips tightened one more time, but Pierre said nothing more as he stepped aside. After all, this had been Abigail’s order. He might be willing to argue with her, but he would never disobey her.
When I entered the room, the light was on and two people were standing there. One was Abigail, and the other was Mara. Both women were dressed properly, not like they were planning on sleeping.
“Are you sure about this?” Abigail asked Mara.
Mara glanced at me and then nodded. “I’m ready.”
She nodded and then turned to me. “I’ve made all the proper preparations. Although this comes with some risk, it is only advantageous if my side grows stronger.”
“I agree.” I took a small bottle out of my Luminal Storage and put it on the counter in front of her.
She nodded and then picked up the bottle, opening it up. A fragrant pharmaceutical smell emerged from the bottle. After sniffing it, she nodded.
“It’s as you claim.” She sighed. “These pills are extremely rare and hard to come by.”
“You can thank the Stride family.” I chuckled. “I just won a bet.”
“Yes… well, it’s still to be seen whether your bet will be in our favor or not.” She lifted the pill and then handed it to Mara. “Once you take this, a surge of energy will erupt inside you. You must use that energy to push forward and evolve into a paragon. I’ve already prepped you as much as I can with knowledge. This will provide the energy. After that, it will be up to you whether you can take the first step into becoming an immortal.”
This was the last thing we had spoken about before she left. Abigail wanted to make sure Mara had the prerequisite understanding to evolve, so it had taken a few days to make sure she was mentally ready. Now, it was time for her to take the next step. Of course, this would result in many things… including a tribulation!
